Bookhead Featured on ISBNdb
Bookhead's founder, Sam McAlilly, was featured on ISBNdb's blog. We use ISBNdb as one of our bibliographic data providers, and we were excited for them to feature us.
We wanted to share so you can understand more about who we are.
Here's a snippet:
Which experiences motivated you to develop Bookhead?
"I used to work as a bookseller for Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi. I experienced firsthand the technological problems that booksellers face with their work. I taught myself to code HTML and CSS at that job so I could redesign the website, then I went on to become a full-time software developer. After a few years of working in tech, I decided to sell my own collectible books online with the hopes of one day opening a brick-and-mortar store. I didn't like any of the software available, so I built the app that I wanted. The app has grown into something much bigger because I never stopped thinking about how I can help my former bookselling coworkers with my technology skills."
What role have books played in your life?
"It's a cliche, but books saved my life. At various points in time, books have always been there to help me along. I read a lot as a kid. I hated the assigned reading in high school, except for Faulkner and Kafka. I was already addicted to the internet, and read a lot of literary stuff on Vice, Thought Catalog, and HTML Giant.
But there were some books in college that set it off for me, like Flannery O'Connor, Barry Hannah, and Zora Neale Hurston. That's when I fell in love with Southern literature. This interest in southern literature helped me get the job at Square Books, which totally transformed my life.
I didn't learn how to truly read a text closely until I took a fiction writing class from Tom Franklin. I've not stopped writing fiction since taking that class, and now I've written a novel. Literature has given me so much."
